A beautiful Impala Ram alert to danger in early morning light near Lower Sabie, Kruger National Park, RSA. Can you see what’s reflected in his eye?

A newish visitor to my plot (Since 2011) and at last some decent Southern Boubou pics!
He (there is a pair) has always been very suspicious of me and my long lens :/ I’ve never been able to get this close. However this morning it was cold and he was hungry. The sun was still rising and had not yet cleared the trees. I got to within 6 feet of him. He eyed me but for the first time was not bothered with my presence. Perhaps he has finally gotten used to me, like many of the other birds on the plot. The first two images he is in the Ehretia rigida “Puzzle Bush” or “Deurmekaarbos”, the last a type of shrub with “Cats Claw” thorns, perhaps the Acacia tortilis “Haak en Steek” variety.

Those who follow me (FaceBook, Twitter, Flickr) will know I’ve been trying to get a magazine quality shot of this beautiful bird showing it’s full iridescence for some time. It came together last week.

(Phoeniculus purpureus)

Green Wood Hoopoe © Harvey Grohmann

They seldom sit still as they constantly dig under bark looking for moths, insects and larvae. Naturally this is done under a canopy of leaves from the tree they have targeted so they are often in the shade. Only sunlight reveals their amazing iridescence which is scant considering the umbrella they have above them. They’ve been near impossible to photograph unless you are in the exact right place, right time and they don’t see you. I Leopard crawled behind him to get this shot.

The Green Wood Hoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureus) is a large, up to 44 cm long, near-passerine tropical bird native to Africa. It is a member of the family Phoeniculidae, the wood Hoopoes, and was formerly known as the Red-billed Wood Hoopoe. They are common but are constantly on the move and very wary. They have the most fabulous laughter/call and are very sociable birds.

The Zulu’s call them “Ntlheki bafazi” because they make (more…)

In order to satisfy my penchant for environment images and not just in your face portraits I decided to have a crack at this PKF taking off from his perch. The bird was +/- 30 paces away. There were two other togs seated next to me one with a new Nikon D800 and both with Nikkor 500mm f/4’s and they refused to take this shot as it was “too far away”… A 36MP Full Frame Camera and a R 60,000.00+ “Professional Lens”. Good Grief 🙂 … and here I am with a DX Nikon D7000 16MP DSLR and (admittedly) a very sharp Sigma 100-300mm f/4 (effectively a 150mm-450mm) making it work for me, with some cropping. It’s not as pixel peeping crisp as it might be if I were sitting on the branch 🙂 but it will print nicely and hang on my wall.
At least my image (below) will be unique online 🙂
