He is quite a character, chasing Elephants, antelope and generally harassing anyone trying to use or drink from the dam. According to the Pilanesberg regulars there are no crocs in the dam… I wonder why? :) The previous day prior to our arrival he climbed out of the water and tried to chase off a few Ellies. I saw the images on a fellow photographers camera. Hilarious. The Elephant refused to budge and got the better of Henry and he bellowed and complained and sulked all the way back to the water.

In order to satisfy my penchant for environment images and not just in your face portraits I decided to have a crack at this PKF taking off from his perch. The bird was +/- 30 paces away. There were two other togs seated next to me one with a new Nikon D800 and both with Nikkor 500mm f/4′s and they refused to take this shot as it was “too far away”… A 36MP Full Frame Camera and a R 60,000.00+ “Professional Lens”. Good Grief :) … and here I am with a DX Nikon D7000 16MP DSLR and (admittedly) a very sharp Sigma 100-300mm f/4 (effectively a 150mm-450mm) making it work for me, with some cropping. It’s not as pixel peeping crisp as it might be if I were sitting on the branch :) but it will print nicely and hang on my wall.
At least my image (below) will be unique online :)

A beautiful African Jacana (Actophilornis africana) who entertained me the entire day however light was dull and I only got a small window of about 10 minutes of sunshine where I patiently got this shot. Sore bums and full bladders in a hide but it can be worth it!

“Wish you were here”
The sheer beauty and size of South Africa’s massive 1,000 km (620 mi) SW to NE mountain range, The Drakensberg, is stunning. Here are images I took recently on a tour of the area. The river flows from the uKhahalamba Nature Reserve near Underberg (Southern Drakensberg) and proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. S29 22 59.988 E29 32 26.016

To watch the mothers and children initially playing in the mud was so much fun. Then the old bull emerged from the bush, where he was hidden from our view feeding. With a flick of his trunk and a subtle move of his body the entire herd stopped playing, as if chided by him, and then proceeded to regroup and leave the water sports in the dam to go dry off. It was inspiring to witness the interaction and intelligence of these massive creatures, and yet not a sound was made by any one of them. Read on to see an edited image and decide what impact that has overall.
