African Jacana (Actophilornis africana)

A beautiful African Jacana (Actophilornis africana) who entertained me the entire day however light was dull and I only got a small window of about 10 minutes of sunshine where I patiently got this shot. Sore bums and full bladders in a hide but it can be worth it!

Senegal Lapwing – KNP

Every now and then I come across a species I have not seen before. Especially one as scarce (in South Africa) as this one.
Whilst I am not a voracious bird ticker I enjoy seeing and photographing a new species.
This little guy and his mate were casually strolling around a typical flat piece of veld on the H9 between Orpen and Letaba camps in January 2012.
I spotted them immediately and pulled over for a few shots. The bird books don’t really show them off as well as this, some with red eyes and that really makes ID’ing difficult.

Brown Hooded Kingfisher

Another beautiful Southern African Kingfisher. Oddly this one doesn’t dive/fish! I have seen him land in shallow pools of water and catch insects, frogs and small mammals. Photographed near Satara, Kruger National Park, RSA at 06:48am in low golden morning light.
