Outgoing SMTP getting you down?

As photographers we’re often on the road with a laptop and some form of Data Stick and e-mails refuse to go out right?

SMTP – POP Diagram

When sending mail, it’s best to use your ISP’s (Internet Service Provider) SMTP for sending emails. Your ISP should have supplied you with the SMTP server address on Sign-Up. Most of them don’t offer this information and you’re left in the dark. Whilst you could use your domains’ SMTP i.e. smtp.mydomainname.co.za, (note you must enter your username and password for that domain for authentication, especially if you are connected to a different ISP) this will eat away the monthly hosting bandwidth and it could also be physically outside of South Africa. Using a local SMTP is faster and doesn’t use up any bandwidth allocation on your domains’ hosting account. Note that you may have to change the SMTP in your email client, i.e. Outlook, Thunderbird etc. when you are roaming or using a hot-spot where the ISP will be different from yours. Note: Some hosts and ISP’s use a different PORT for their SMTP. Contact your supplier to obtain this info. Google is your friend if you can’t get a human being on the line!

Dave, have you tried contacting them directly? After all you are paying them for a service and they should have sent you their connectivity details upon joining. Pass them on to me and I will update the post. Thanks!

I had a telkom internet account and email and everything worked fine on my ipad. Last week i switched to a different isp but i still have my telkom email. Since i switched to another isp i find that i cant send email from my ipad, i get an error that says cant send email because server doesnt allow relaying. I still receive email and i can still send and receive email from my pc. The only thing i cant do is send email from my ipad. Any idea why this happens?

Yes, you cannot SEND email via ISP B when you are logged in to ISP A. You must send via ISP B’s SMTP.
That’s called relaying and no ISP allows it. i.e. If you are with POLKA and you you try send via TELKOM it won’t work.
Receiveing mail is password controlled and is thus not affected.

Hi Harvey. IPad email transmission is a hurdle for my new IPad also. I have tried “smtp.telkomsa.net” “smtp.dsl.telkomsa.net” “webmail.telkomsa.net” and “smtp.saix.net” all to no avail.
Am wondering what else I can do

As an aside, my BlackBerry connected itself and found the POP and SMTP servers all by itself.

Hi Mark, WordPress spammed you sorry so only saw your post tonight during my bimonthly unspam session.
What ISP are you with? Or what Cell Provider? That may be a clue to getting the right SMTP
      Regards
      Harvey
